Reviews of Woodland Park

From Bixby...

My class went to Woodland Park for community service. What I liked about it was that my dad was chaperoning, we got to dig around in some mulch, and we walked around a lot. What I didn’t like about it was that it was tiring, cold, and raining. Overall though it was fun.

I really liked my dad chaperoning because he made me feel more safe, comfortable, and happy. This is the first time this year that my dad has been able to chaperone so that’s special. I enjoyed watching him connect and interact with the other kids. I hope my dad will chaperone more often.
Digging in the mulch was fun because it was warm and I made this system where I trade empty buckets of mulch for full ones at the mulch pile. Then I bring them downhill and trade for empty buckets. Soon everyone caught on and followed my example. What I didn’t like about it was that it was wet and dirty. Overall it was positive.

Walking to and from Woodland Park was fun because I got to get a workout, chat with my friends, and have some bonding time with my dad. Unfortunately the walk was long and tiring. Overall I liked it.

My class went to Woodland Park. I think your class should go to. You would like having a chaperone-parent, a dig in the mulch, and a walk to and from Woodland Park. Overall you would like it.

From Gianna...

We went to Woodland Park to help with the nature. During the first activity we did it was cold, and then other weather events made it even more cold. By the end of the trip, all of the 5th graders were working on spreading mulch in the cold weather.

Woodland Park was very cold. My group started working on moving fallen logs to help the new seedling. It was very cold and raining. We had only very thin gardening gloves and that did not help keep our hands warm in the cold. But we still worked on moving logs until we finished working on that log pile. Then we worked on a second log pile. And all the while it was freezing and hailing.

The weather was not good. At first as we were walking to the park it was just windy and gray, then it started misting. The misting turned into rain and then hail as we were working on moving logs. Once we finished doing that we went over to the group working on mulch.  And then it started to lightly snow which lasted about a minute and turned into ice crystals which turned into hail again. On our way back there was just rain though.

My group worked on mulch once the logs were finished. At first everyone  had one bucket and they fit up and emptied it. Then after a little while there were some people who just got the mulch in to buckets and some people who took the buckets and  then dumped them around the seedling plants. Once the group that was working on removing blackberries came to the mulch area everyone was doing mulch. Then there were bucket fillers, bucket traders and bucket dumpers. The fillers filled the buckets with mulch and gave them to the traders. The traders passed full buckets to the dumpers and received empty buckets to return to the fillers.

After we finished working on the mulch we got mini doughnuts and walked back to school with about an hour left. We were all cold but happy to return to school where it was warm and dry.
