Highlights of the week for Max

Last Friday, we made yurts.  Mongol warriors lived in the yurts.  They are basically like tents and they were easy to take down and put up. They go on horseback so they can carry their homes and travel with them.  Mongols are nomads who travel to fight in different places.  They printed money on paper and that was the first time paper money was used.  We use paper money today.

We also did brush painting for like the fifth time.  I am starting to write a new book about on camping.  I am also writing about a bunch of dynasties.  I am working on the Yuan Dynasty now.  We filled up the marble jar so I'm thinking about some ideas for the celebration. My main idea is watching a movie.

Highlights of the week for Tim

We did Song Dynasty Brush Painting.  It was really fun, especially doing the bird.  When we were reading Scholastic, there were two parts in the magazine and they were really interesting.  One article was about a giant squid named Karkin and the other one was about a tsunami.  And, the tsunami flooded Japan but brought things to the US.  It snowed today!!!

I'm reading a book called Ribsy.  It is about a dog and he went shopping with Henry, his mom and his dad.  They Henry and his mom went to the shopping mall as Ribsy waited in the car.  Then there was this dog that was barking and the dog's owner tried to get the dog to stop barking.  They left and then Ribsy wanted to go with Henry, his mom, and his dad but he got lost in a rain storm.  There were these five girls that found him, then they took him  home.  When the family got to their house, they had a one year old baby and his name was George.  I don't know what happened next because I haven't go to that part yet.

Highlights of the Week for Ian

The highlights of my week was my dad's birthday, having sleepover with friends, learning about the Song Dynasty, and Yuan Dynasty.

I learned about the inventions of the Song Dynasty, some of them are the windmill and landmine.  In the Yuan Dynasty, Genghis Khan took over China and his son, Kublai Kahn finish conquering territories.  They came from Mongolia.  They were really fierce, stubborn probably, warriors.

On Saturday, I went to the international district and my mom went to Uwajimaia.  We bought coconut water for my dad's birthday.  My dad at that time was up skiing at Cristal.  We took photographs we were hoping to turn into a bulletin board with pictures but we turned into a slide show instead.

Highlights of the week for Carys

My highlights are learning about the Song Dynasty and Chinese Brush Painting.  We also learned about the four treasure of China - ink stone, mulberry paper, ink brush, and ink stick.  It was a very fun week learning about China.  We painted lizards and bamboo leaves.  It was really fun to learn to hold the brush; it made you feel like you were in ancient China.  I also painted a flower.

We have new small groups and we have mini books to focus on.  It is really fun. One was about Texas and the other was about Massachusetts.  It was fun to learn about different states.  We generated ideas for our non fiction writing.  I generated horses, flowers, nature, and the four treasures of China. I did so many post-its I forgot the rest.

Karthik's Highlights of the Week

I had fun with Josiah and the Cat in the Hat Reading Group.  And I had fun when I was reading to Max outside in the hallways with Ms. Carolyn.  Max had fun with me.  In writing, I was writing with Ms. Kathleen and I remember at recess, Charlie and I played tag.  I learned in the Song Dynasty when rice was introduced, the rice fields were in water.  The Chinese grow fishes in the rice fields and the fishes eat the mosquitoes and the people eat the fishes.  The fishes also poop in the water and the poop fertilized the rice.  The rice sucks up the water and the water level becomes lower as the fishes get eaten.  When the water is all used up, it is time to eat the rice (harvest time).

In the Song Dynasty, they also introduced footbinding for women.  They break the edge of their feet, roll them under so they have small feet.  They call these feet lotuses because the small dainty feet look nice.  We also did poems.
