The Capitol Building

On New Year's Eve, we took Amis and Mahee to see the Capitol Building.  It's where the Untied States Congress meets to make laws.  We were hoping to have a tour, but it was closed for the holiday! Here are some pictures outside:

We had such a fun time with Mahee and Amis!  Thanks for sending them to visit us!

I Love Pandas!

Mahee and Amis met some of the animals that live here in our zoo. Their favorite animals were the giant pandas! The panda is small in this picture...he is sitting down eating right above Amis's head:

Here is a better picture of one of the Giant Pandas:

The National Mall

Today Mahee and Amis did a long walk down the National Mall.  We didn't do any shopping because it's not a store.  It's a place where people go to see a lot of monuments. Here is a picture of me and Amis with the National Mall behind us.  The tall building is the Washington Monument.

This is Thomas Jefferson's Memorial.  He has a memorial because he wrote the Declaration of Independence.

This is part of the Declaration of Independence that was written on the wall of the Memorial:

This is looking out of the Jefferson Memorial at the Washington Monument:

Next we saw the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial.  He was the president during WWII and the Great Depression. Here is a statue of his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt.

We saw the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.  He fought for Civil Rights.

And finally we saw the Lincoln Memorial which celebrates all that Abraham Lincoln did to help free slaves during the Civil War.

Amis and Mahee's trip to Washington DC

Amis and Mahee made it to our house in Gaithersburg, Maryland!!
We took them on a tour of the Washington DC which is the capital of the United States.

Our first stop was Mount Vernon.
Mount Vernon is George Washington's home.
George Washington was the first president of the United States.
This is Amis in the back of his house:

And here is Mahee:

The Potomac River is in his backyard.
I think Mahee wanted to try swimming in it!

Here we are sitting on the back porch:

We went on a tour of the house.  One thing Mahee and Amis learned is that they rebuilt his house three times!

Mahee is Here! ...and off again to Washington D.C.

Mahee and her children came.  However, she was held up in Pakistan for about a month and when she arrived, she was injured.  Could it be customs looking for contraband being smuggled to the US?

Mahee had surgery and was stitched up.  Good as new!

Mahee is a an Indus Dolphin native to the Indus River of Pakistan and India.  She can only survived in fresh water and Pakistan is the only location where they exist.. They occupy 690 km of the Indus River, a 80% reduction in the size of their habitat from 1870.  There are only approximately 1,200 Indus Dophins in the world and they are considered an endangered species.  They are also know as blind dolphins.  Their eyes are not functional and they navigate using echolocation - sound waves.

After Mahee was fixed up, she traveled again to Washington D.C.  to the Johnson family (Lauren!!)

Mahee brought some souvenirs of the Pakistani culture.  The models of the cars are hand painted and reflect real cars you see on the streets of Karachi, Pakistan.
